Etymology and Ancient Beliefs
- The term autumn can be traced back to the ancient Etruscan word autu, which means passing of the year. Before the 16th century, autumn was commonly used to refer to the season of harvest.
- In ancient times, autumn was one of the most important periods of the year as daylight began to fade while darkness lay ahead. Many societies practiced rituals and offerings to their gods and goddesses for a bountiful harvest that would see them through winter. Aztecs in ancient Mexico used to practice human sacrifice to honor their goddess of sustenance and fertility.
- In Greek mythology, Horae was the god of the seasons, in-charge of the natural portions of time and weather, while the Romans believed that Autumnus was the bringer of the fruit and nut harvest.
- In ancient Japan, farmers practiced fire offerings in honor of Huichi in exchange for energy to finish the harvest.
- In addition, Pueblo Indians in the Americas performed rituals honoring the corn mother known as Selu. She was believed to be the giver of abundant harvests and healing.
- The origin of the Christian celebration the “Day of Assumption” was from the ancient celebration of the “Feast of Our Lady of Harvest.”
The Season of Autumn
- In America and Canada, autumn is also known as fall. The derivation of the term fall can be traced to multiple origins such as Old Germanic, Old Norse, and Old English languages.
- By the 16th century, it came with the expression “fall of the year” and “fall of the leaf.”
- The weather also begins to get colder and many plants stop making food. Autumn is the time when deciduous trees shed their leaves.
- The leaves change from green to red, orange, yellow or brown before falling. In addition, there is less sunlight because the days are shorter.
- The Autumnal Equinox (around September 23 in the Northern Hemisphere and March 21 in the Southern Hemisphere) signifies the start of autumn, and it ends with the Winter Solstice (around December 21 in the Northern Hemisphere and June 21 in the Southern Hemisphere.) The Autumn Equinox is also called Harvest Home, Mabon, and Alban-Elfed. In New Zealand and Australia, autumn begins on March 1 until May 31.
- The season of autumn is also called the aurora season because clear evening skies make for good stargazing.
- The Autumnal Equinox is the two times of the year when day and night are of same length. It happens when the sun is exactly above the equator.
- The full moon closest to the Autumn Equinox is called the Harvest Moon. It was believed to be vital for an abundant harvest.
- During autumn, many birds prepare for winter migration, while other animals practice their mating instincts.
- Monarch butterflies from the U.S. migrate to Mexico during autumn. They are the only insects that migrate such long distances to a warmer climate.
- The season of autumn is largely associated with harvest time. In western cultures, various harvest festivals are celebrated during fall. One of these is the Thanksgiving holiday that is widely celebrated in the United States and Canada. The Jewish Sukkot holiday is also celebrated during autumn. Moreover, Chinese people celebrate the lunar Mid-autumn Festival.
- Some common autumn harvests are pumpkin, apple, and corn.
- Other autumn holidays include Labor Day, Remembrance Day, Veterans Day, Columbus Day, Halloween, and Patriot Day.
- Halloween is primarily associated with fall. It came from the Celtic autumn tradition.
- In Munich, Germany, Oktoberfest is celebrated during autumn. Over 5 million liters of beer are consumed. It all began in 1810 during the wedding of the crown prince.
- In poetry, autumn is often associated with melancholia. Poets such as William Butler Yeats, Paul Verlaine, and John Keats symbolically represent the season of autumn as bountiful and depicting maturity.
- In the Northern Hemisphere, the Christian religious holidays of
- All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day is observed during autumn.
- According to superstition, when a person catches a falling leaf during autumn, good luck will come to them.

Finally autumn aka the best season of the entire year is upon us. Autumn is amazing, and each year it brings a unique set of events that only happen during these special months. Long gone is the unpredictability of the British summer, and instead we welcome in cosy nights in with the heating on, new TV shows, the countdown to Crimbo, and obviously all of the stodgy food we can get our mitts on.
1. The cold Yes it gets chilly, but we all know that this is actually a good thing. Cooler weather means less pressure to pretend you’re enjoying yourself at a rubbish BBQ, and also the return of tights.
2. The rain It rains, and you don’t even get angry. Whereas in summer the slightest drizzle practically caused steam to come out of your nose. Plus the return of the rain means that you can be reunited with your trusty brolly. You were getting quite lonely without it.
3. The flu Try to avoid it as much as you like, but no amount of anti-bacterial gel and Vitamin C tablets will help. You will be struck down, it will be terrible, and you will spend at least 20 per cent of your income on medicine and fancy tissues that don’t make your nose skin peel off.
4. Wet socks Unless you’ve invested in a pair of farmer type wellies, you will encounter soggy socks at least once a week. Best keep a spare pair in your coat for such situations.
5. So many hot drinks You will definitely overdose on your fair share of all autumnal themed drinks available. If it contains cinnamon, ginger or nutmeg you’re all over it. The return of the PSL is your actual highlight of the entire year.
6. Sunshine Warning – this is very rare. But on these rare occasions when the hot ball of fire in the sky pops up to remind us that it still exists everything gets super pretty. The leaves look stunning, and everything feels fresh.
7. Return of the pie Summer time meant that we felt it appropriate to eat stuff like salads, fruit and general cold items. However autumn brings about the return of the pie, which suddenly becomes your go to weekend hangover food. The more potato and cheese filled, the better.
8. Weight gain Thanks to all of the pies, the hot drinks, the hot desserts and the general fear of having to parade yourself semi-naked on a beach anytime soon disappearing, you do gain a little extra padding. Don’t worry, it’s a great way to keep yourself warm.
9. Complaints On a daily basis you will hear complaints on a various range of subjects such as the cold, the rain, Christmas decorations in shops too early, Halloween becoming more mainstream. But mainly you will hear complaints about the weather.
10. You get hairy If you’re female then you’re totes ditching the razor and investing in some tights. Maybe thermal ones if you really fancy splashing out. Once again, this aids in keeping you warm, so it makes sense.
11. TV gets good Why go out when you can cosy up on the sofa with your fleece on, and a blanket wrapped around you watching a bit of Strictly or X Factor? Preferably with a cheese and potato pie next to you. Perfection.
12. The onesie is back You try to fight it, but inevitably you’re forced to embrace the sweet and cosy nature of your fleecy onesie. Perfect for hangover days, movie marathons, and sometimes popping to your local for a quick drink.
13. The WINTER COAT struggle Do you buy the first coat you fall in love with? Or do you wait a few weeks for more styles to become available? Do you wait for a mid season sale? Or should you just take the plunge? SO MANY CHOICES.
14. The clothes get better There is no need to worry about trying to fit yourself into those shorts, or that strapless dress. Those days are long gone. Instead the hardest decision you will have to make is which cosy jumper to wear today. Hello comfort, goodbye weird thigh sweat.
15. It all gets very pretty The leaves go a nice orange shade, conkers pop up everywhere and pumpkins become stylish decorations. Way better than sitting on a park bench watching daffodils struggle to stay upright in the face of torrential rain, aka spring.
